Outside, under the hot Los Angeles moon, she considered jumping on the 405 and driving out of town.
She crisscrossed the still-busy late-night LA traffic, from the Marina through Venice, up Olympic to her apartment on the Westside.
There were no parking places in the street, so she slammed on the brakes and pulled into the full tenantsâ lot, leaving her car in the middle, blocking everyone.
She stepped out and limped as fast as she could; sharp pain rotated through her restricted movement.
Inside, a hot shower beat down on her. The chaotic and steady roar continued and raced through her mind, focusing on the new sensibility that had kidnapped her spirit. She slept for a couple of hours on the edge of scattered dreams that later, before sunrise, when she tried to understand their searching quality, seemed empty.
It was dark outside, but she felt the coolness of the night wearing down into the dryness of the day.
Her room was a mess with clothes, books, papers, shoes, and makeup strewn everywhere.
A large photo of Edie Sedgwick dominated the wall above her bed.
A siren wailed down Santa Monica Boulevard.
The pillow became hot and wet, so she flipped it around, twisting her neck from side to side to loosen her torpid face and cheekbones. Her shoulders were locked up on her neck.
The sight of her one-page screenplay outline and the interested note on her desk from the producer made her convulse in hacking coughs. She wiped away the tears and read the outline that had drawn the producerâs interest.
Twenty-one-year-old F. Scott Fitzgerald was a pretty boy, a drinker, remarkably outgoing for one so sensitive and, of course, gifted. It was during this period in his life that he fell madly in love with the beautiful, eccentric, and talented eighteen-year-old Southern belle, Zelda Sayre.
I have an intelligent, marketable, feature-length script that captures the complexity, beauty, and excitement of these two American legends.
